"......."For me, the reality of live performance is what I love. Theatre is my number one," he says, sipping a glass of mineral water. He pauses and adds: "I’d love to do a musical film one day. Me and my friend have talked about doing Blood Brothers." His friend is former flat mate, pop star, fellow British sex symbol and one-time co-star Robbie Williams. The pair once appeared together in Wilkes’ acting debut, a Stoke production of Hans Christian Andersen.
He recalled how Williams - five years Wilkes’ senior - convinced him that the director wanted him to run across the stage while lifting up his nightgown. "I was only seven at the time," he adds in his defence. Having forgiven him the prank long ago, the two became fast friends - a fact the media has rarely ignored.
"Robbie Williams is my mate who I’ve known all my life," he beams. "And I understand the press interest in me and him being mates and he’s the biggest star in our country and rightly so. I’m very, very proud of him."
Wilkes’ own climb to success, while not quite as meteoric as Williams’, has featured some impressive landmarks along the way. After he left football he began performing, winning the prestigious Cameron Mackintosh Young Entertainer of the Year Award at the age of 17. Later, along with his stint on The Match, he presented You’ve Been Framed and Love On A Saturday Night for ITV. He even won Celebrity Stars In Their Eyes......."
