EMI sings praises of mobile video downloads

' EMI and mobile phone operator 3 have signed a deal to make the record company's entire catalogue of mobile music available for download.
EMI, which handles entertainers like Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Coldplay, Joss Stone and Norah Jones, will run an EMI top 100 tracks for download, either in MP3 or ACC format. Virgin and Chrysalis, who are also part of the EMI Group, will also be making music available.
“Music is one of our most popular services and through this deal our customers will be able to enjoy the very latest audio tracks from top artists like Kylie, Robbie and Coldplay,” said Bob Fuller, chief executive of 3 UK.
Last year 3 made Robbie William's latest album available for download before it hit the shops and the company has already signed a similar deal with Sony BMG and several independent music companies.
Last week analysts at Informa estimated the total market for music downloads would be worth $11bn by 2010, although piracy could make inroads into this. Meanwhile handset manufacturers are already bringing in new models aimed at the mobile music sector.
