Madonna saw off pretenders to her throne with a virtuoso live performance in Lisbon last night. The queen of pop thrilled fans by emerging from a giant disco ball to sing Hung Up at the MTV Europe awards.
After her dramatic entrance, the Material Girl stripped down to a purple leotard and cavorted with dancers, proving she's well back on form after her August riding accident. "It was amazing to be able to get up and dance. You don't beat singing live," said the American after opening the ceremony. "Waiting to see the audience, my heart was just pumping out of my chest."
For the Brits there was also ample reason to celebrate. Coldplay were named top UK and Ireland act, while their single Speed Of Sound triumphed in the category for best song. Completing the picture of British success, Robbie Williams, Gorillaz and James Blunt also picked up a handful of gongs between them.
Having left Ali G at home, Sacha Baron Cohen compered the show as his Kazakhstani alter ego Borat, guaranteeing a night of outrageous gags. The comic welcomed the audience to the "Eurovision Song Contest." Then, in a cheeky reference to Madonna's act, he praised MTV for hiring "a genuine transvestite."
But the megastar showed no signs of annoyance when she returned to the stage to present pal Bob Geldof with a Free Your Mind humanitarian award. "You drive me crazy, but tonight you are everyone's hero," Madonna told the Live 8 organiser after hugging him warmly.'
