Madonna and Geldof triumph in Germany

'Pop superstar MADONNA and crusading rocker SIR BOB GELDOF were the big winners at Germany's annual Echo music awards last night (12MAR06). The MATERIAL GIRL was voted Best Female Artist at the Berlin prize giving, although she failed to attend the event in person. Another absentee, British singer ROBBIE WILLIAMS, took the Best Male award and promised to be back in the country for the football World Cup this summer (06) via a pre-recorded video message. Live 8 organiser Geldof received a standing ovation when he took to the stage to receive a special honour for his tireless poverty campaigning. He warned the audience, "When the representatives of industrialised nations meet next year at the G8 conference in Germany, it will be your turn." Rockers COLDPLAY won the Best International Group award, while US metal group SYSTEM OF A DOWN and Argentine singer SEMINO ROSSI were recognised for the contributions to music too.
