How a rant about Robbie Williams turned Eoin Colfer into a comic

TWO years ago, Eoin Colfer, best-selling author of the Artemis Fowl books, was due to appear at the Edinburgh Book Festival. But getting here from his home in Wexford in south-east Ireland was harder than he had bargained for.

A Robbie Williams concert had booked out every hotel in Dublin. Then his flight was diverted to Belfast and he had to speed between the two cities in a taxi. "I literally got off the plane, got into a taxi, got out of the taxi, ran into the theatre and was on. I just went in and began to rant on about Robbie Williams and the airlines and everything that had annoyed me that day."
The audience loved it. And, to his amazement, he learned a week later that a newspaper had given him an award for his comedy performance.
