Musical battlefield for Wembley
2005-04-04
The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Robbie Williams, and Irish rockers U2 have all thrown their hats into the ring as to who will be able to take the title of being the first band to open the new Wembley Stadium upon its completion in 2006.According to ContactMusic.com, The Stones have secured the gig. The veteran Brits would most certainly have the biggest swing in the preverbial game as they have played to 12 sold out audiences of 72,000 in the English Stadium in a time period spanning from 1982-2002. The last gig played inside the stadium was just before its demolition in 2002 to make way for the building of the newer stadium. The opening of the stadium would already fit into U2's "Vertigo" world tour, giving them what would be the obvious 2nd running.
