Robbie: I'm not moving to the Lakes

'ROBBIE Williams is denying reports that he has bought a £2m country manor in the Lake District. A national newspaper said the multi-millionaire pop star had snapped up a former hotel near Windermere. And people in the area were excited by the news, but the former Take That heartthrob’s public relations agency, Taylor Herring, today denied any knowledge of the deal. A spokesman said: “It has nothing to do with Robbie Williams and we know nothing about the house that was bought.” Reports stated the singer had bought a home with nine bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a sauna and a billiards room on eight-and-a-half acres of land. Matthews Benjamin estate agents in Windermere yesterday confirmed to the Evening Mail it has just sold a property matching that exact description for £2m. A Matthews Benjamin spokesman said: “The deal was done through an elderly man over the phone. All the locals have been in asking if the house was bought by Robbie Williams. “Quarry Garth (on Ambleside Road, Troutbeck Bridge) is the only £2m house that has been sold in the Windermere area recently.” After hearing the rumour Robbie might have bought the house, excited locals had been looking forward to meeting their new neighbour. Jennifer Borer, who represents the Tories on South Lakeland District Council for Windermere Applethwaite, said Robbie would be treated like any other resident. She said: “It’s quite a popular area for pop stars and sporting people so it’s possible he is moving in. “Famous people tend to come up here and they want peace and quiet. It’s like Prince Charles - he’s just another resident where he lives.” Peter Tyson, clerk at Furness Magistrates’ Court, who also lives at Troutbeck Bridge, said: “I am surprised he has not chosen a more secluded area because Quarry Garth is next to the busiest road in the Lake District. “I don’t think we will see much of him.” Quarry Garth includes a four-bed lodge, which could be converted into a recording studio. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, Robbie recently sold his five-bedroom house in Ladbroke Grove, West London, which he bought for £4.5m in 2000. Despite extensive renovations, he spent little time there and put the house up for sale after moving to Los Angeles. His former bandmate Mark Owen owns a house just 23 miles away from Windermere, in Leck, near Carnforth, in Lancashire.'
